He introduced the first dental laser surgery to the Prescott area in 2005 and has advanced training in dental laser technique. He incorporated a comprehensive non-surgical periodontal therapy program aligned with the Centers for Dental Medicine utilizing lasers and DNA diagnostics. His practice also included the CEREC same-day crown system.

He created the Sleep Effect Center for Apnea Management in 2009 providing oral appliance therapy in a comprehensive program, an effective alternative to CPAP and other breathing machines for patients with sleep apnea. He holds Diplomate credentials in dental sleep medicine from both the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines and the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, one of fewer than 300 dentists internationally. His practice is limited to sleep apnea management since 2011. He created the Sleep Matters Center for Apnea Management in Tucson to bring this therapy to Southern Arizona residents.

Professional memberships include the ADA, the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Goodwin has written columns for local newspapers and has had articles published in national dental magazines, as well as creating and presenting education and training programs in the field of dental sleep medicine to dentists and physicians nationally.

Introduction

Research and technological advancement in dentistry has occurred at a staggering pace and who could have predicted at the beginning of our careers that 3D imaging, CAD designed restorations and laser surgeries would be commonplace in our profession. No less intriguing and challenging has been my introduction to the field of dental sleep medicine in 2008. I made the commitment to devote my career to this field and began practicing sleep apnea management full time in 2011; ultimately becoming Diplomate credentialed by both the ACSDD and the ABDSM.

The greatest challenge I have faced is educating physicians regarding the validity of oral appliance therapy and encouraging them to be comfortable advising their patients to consider this option when PAP therapy is not being used. New technology allowing the pretesting of patients to determine responsiveness to the oral device may ultimately help change the paradigm. Writing articles and essays on the topic at hand is one method I have used to help improve awareness, and I have written and presented programs to the public, to dentists and physicians as well.
